How to Tie: To make this, pass the end of rope around the spar or timber, then over itself; over and around the spar, and pass the end under itself and between rope and spar, as shown in the illustration.

The Figure 8 makes a stopper knot at the end of a line, and it's necessary to use this knot in order to tie several other more complex knots.
How to Tie: To tie a Figure 8, also known as a Flemish Knot, you simply pass the free end of a line over itself to form a loop. Continue under and around the line's end, and finish the knot by passing the free end down through the loop.
Tracer 8
It is made by forming a regular figure eight and then “following round” with the other rope as in Fig. 25. It is then drawn taut and the ends seized to the standing part if desired.
